Hey guys, thanks for joining us back at Trivial Warfare. This is Jonathan and I’m taking responsibility for this week’s show notes. I’m sad to say that Linda Hollister, one of our first ever warheads and Chris’ mother has been in the hospital this week. Chris is doing what any good son would and spending time with her and making sure that everything is getting taken care of so I volunteered to pick up the slack on this end.
As you guys know, last week while we were on break we released a short puzzle so that you could have a little fun in lieu of a full episode. In the puzzle I provided 5 sounds clips, two numbers and 1 question and asked you to answer the question. Here’s how you could have worked it out:
1. Bridge Over The River Kwai (Alec Guinness talking about British soldiers building a bridge)
2. The King and I (Julie Andrews singing Getting to Know You)
3. Psycho (The Shower Scene)
4. Rock Around the Clock (the actual song)
5. Ben-Hur (a man describing Ben-Hur and using his first name, Judah. Also includes Charlton Heston’s voice)
Connecting the sound clips was probably the hardest part. The trick is that they weren’t connected by awards or common actors or directors or anything like that. They are all actually lyrics within the song We Didn’t Start the Fire by Billy Joel.
And logically the answer to that very popular trivia question is Mrs. O’Leary’s Cow.
Kudos to everyone who solved the puzzle correct. In particular congrats to our 3 winners:
1. Jeffrey Seguritan – Jeffrey figured out the answer almost immediately. Since then he’s also been posting some AMAZING questions over on our Facebook group page.
2. Bob Oakes – I’m proud of my big brother for figuring it out and I’m included his story of how he did it below
3. Kieran McCarthy – along with his bandmates Colm and Sean from The Baby Cheeses.
Great job by everyone! I always found it interesting to hear how each person figured it out. My brother Bob shared his process with me in writing and it gave me a chuckle so I decided to share it with you below.
It was almost 11 pm when I took another listen to the question. I decided I would take a quick listen again before going to bed. I had listened earlier in the day. I knew Bridge on the River Kwai, Psycho, Rock Around the Clock (thinking American Grafitti or Happy Days), and thinking possibly Ben-Hur or some Julius Ceasar type movie. Also knew it was Julie Andrews thinking but couldn’t place the movie. As usual, I was listening in the car on the way to work, so I couldn’t write anything down the first time. On the first listen, I had absolutely no clue what the numbers meant.
So at 11 pm, I listen again. I write down the movies, and look them up on IMBD and Wikipedia. I’ve got no clue how to put these together. I wrote down the years thinking that American Graffiti or Happy Days was a bit of an outlier. So I put the other ones in a google search, and boom—Billy Joel came up. I’m thinking…what the heck does this have to do with Billy Joel. I click on the link and see the lyric sheet for “We didn’t start the fire.” I’m thinking, well now I know “who didn’t.” So I have my common bond. I’m trying to figure out who started the fire. But I’m looking for a person…how the heck are the numbers going to give me a person.
I look through the wiki page on the song, Billy Joel, anything, looking for how the numbers relate. I’ve got nothing. So it’s getting late, and I’m tired. I put one of the numbers in a google search and got bupkiss. I put the other number in and got even less than bupkiss. I put in the negative number without the negative sign, and all of a sudden all sorts of things pop up. I’m looking at all sorts of weird stuff, and it dawns on me…coordinates! These are coordinates! I found a site to plug them into, and I get---The Washington St Tunnel. Huh? Did Washington do it? I don’t remember Washington starting any fires. This doesn’t make any sense. My contacts are drying out, and I’m trying to buy a clue. Okay, the Washington St Tunnel is in Chicago. I’m still stuck on Washington thinking—first president…but it doesn’t feel right. I’m looking up the Wikipedia page for Washington St tunnel. I’m looking for anything that puts the pieces together. I’m starting to doze off at the computer. My mind is starting to wander a bit… Maybe there was a fire in the Washington St Tunnel…
Then it hits me like a ton of bricks—Not Washington—Chicago!! The Great Chicago Fire!!! Well, I know who started that—Mrs. O’Leary’s cow!!! Mr. Riddell taught me that over 20 years ago! I was so relieved. I get to go to bed!!! Hey, wasn’t I just going to listen one quick time and go to bed anyways? It’s almost midnight. Crap.
I can’t resist a challenging puzzle. Thanks!
